Sophia Costa of Sterling Heights and Jack Rich of Birch Run were awarded 2024 Carl Parsell Scholarships of $2,500 each to help fund their multiple degree higher education programs.

Costa has already earned her associate’s degree and expects to complete her final year of a bachelor’s degree this fall at Wayne State University. Rich graduated from high school in May, and plans to use his scholarship funds to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Saginaw Valley State University.

The highly-driven students have earned honors for academic excellence and both have plans to obtain Doctorate degrees.

Costa and Rich were formally recognized during the 34th Annual Carl Parsell Memorial Golf Outing on June 13, 2024 at The Links of Novi Singh.

The Carl Parsell Scholarship Fund, established in 1991, continues the legacy of Carl Parsell, a law enforcement union movement pioneer, by improving the lives and futures of others through education. Scholarships are awarded annually to Michigan family members of Michigan Association of Police (MAP), Michigan Association of Public Employees (MAPE) and Michigan Association of Fire Fighters (MAFF) union members.

Since the fund's inception, $148,000 in scholarships have been awarded. Scholarship funds are derived from the Annual Carl Parsell Memorial Golf Outing.
