Sterling Heights Road Patrol Officer Ken Mercer was initially appointed to the MAP Executive Board as Treasurer in October 2023. He was elected as Executive Board Vice President just a few months later in December 2023. With Sterling Heights PD since 1997, Mercer has been a MAP member his entire career. He has served on the Sterling Heights Police Officers Association Board since 2013. He was elected the Local Union Vice President for eight years before serving in his current role as Local Union President since 2022. A Detective for 15 years, he was a member of the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team (DFAT), a division of the U.S. Marshals Service from 2004 to 2006. He’s been serving the Sterling Heights Fire Department as an Origin and Cause Investigator, assisting in fire investigations since 2003. Since 2010, Mercer has been at the ready as a Sterling Heights Special Response Team (SRT) member. Sterling Heights SRT is part of a consortium including five other police departments, with over 100 specially trained officers who are deployed in high-risk situations requiring advanced police tactics He became Sterling Heights SRT Assistant Team Leader in 2014, a position he held until he was appointed as SRT Team Leader in 2023 by the Sterling Heights Chief of Police. As Team Leader, Mercer is responsible for supervising the assigned Team Members during training exercises and SRT deployments. Mercer earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Lake Superior State University.
