The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum will honor the heroic law enforcement officers who died responding to the 9/11 attacks and those who died in the years following due to 9/11-related illnesses during a memorial service broadcast live on Facebook.

The 9/11 Memorial Service begins at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. The live broadcast is in lieu of inviting guests during the pandemic.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fatal crash of a hijacked plane in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. Of those, 72 died during the response and another 350 have perished since then from illnesses caused by harmful exposure to toxic materials during that response.

"Unfortunately, we continue to see officer deaths stemming from 9/11, even 19 years later," said National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund CEO Marcia Ferranto. "Every year our staff has honored these fallen heroes on 9/11 with a remembrance service at the Memorial, and despite coronavirus concerns, we decided this year would be no exception."
